Physical Therapy being just as effective as surgery?

Nassau County Physical Therapist

When it comes to certain injuries, patients are often told that their only option is surgery. This can be both scary and expensive. Fortunately, studies today are showing that patients who undergo surgery are exhibiting the same results as patients that only use physical therapy to heal their injuries.

These studies have been conducted on different patients with different ranges of injuries including meniscal tears, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, and lumbar spinal stenosis. Surgeries for these common injuries have a 15% complication rate along with hospital bills and recovery time, making physical therapy a better option along the lines of money and time spent on the injury. Also, when surgery is used to fix these injuries, physical therapy is typically required after the surgery. This means that a patient has two options. Option A is physical therapy on its own which is not overly expensive, has minimal health risks and has limited to no recovery time. Option B is surgery which has complication risks, hospital bills, long recovery times and also requires physical therapy after. If you can skip straight to physical therapy and healing, why add in surgery when you will most likely wind up in a physical therapist’s office anyway.

Of course in some serious injury cases, surgery may still be needed after physical therapy has been tried. These cases are more common in serious meniscal tears and older patients. However, if surgery can be avoided in favor of physical therapy, why would you want to put your body and wallet through it.
